FROM FERTENIA RESEARCH THE PERFECT SYNERGY FOR EXCELLENT FRUIT SET
Fruit setting is one of the most delicate phenological phases and is the process of transformation of the floral organs into fruits following fertilization. It is a crucial phase, influenced by numerous environmental factors.
In the Olive tree, the fruit setting rate varies considerably and ranges from 1 to 10% (ratio between the number of total flowers and the number of fertilized flowers). The causes are multiple and range from the presence of numerous imperfect or unfertilized flowers and the self-regulation processes typical of this crop and the availability of water and nutrients.
Within two weeks of fruit set, many fruit drop due to competition. Only 1–2% of flowers will form fruit that will reach full maturity.
Such a low ratio between the number of flowers and the number of fruits depends on both genetic factors and the availability of nutritional resources and reserves of the plant, the fewer resources are available, and the fewer fruits will be brought to full maturity. Adverse environmental factors such as late cold, excess humidity and strong winds can further aggravate this situation causing a drop in production.
The supply of microelements such as Boron, in pre-flowering, can promote better pollen germination which translates into a greater number of fertilized flowers, but this alone is not enough to increase the ratio between the number of fruitlets and the number of fruits brought to maturity.
It is essential to provide the plant with everything it needs, avoiding competition between fertilized flowers with a consequent drop of the fruit.
